Dr. Dennis is a retired dentist, and was an Associate Professor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in Newark, USA for most of her career. The SAS Award is only bestowed on 150 individuals throughout the world each year. It is the most prestigious award Rotary International gives. After the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, the entire professional class fled for their lives and never came back. Dr. Dennis went to Rwanda to help rebuild the local health care infrastructure. She spent a full year at the Kigali Health Institute, training 60 students to be dental health care auxiliaries, and in this way made a permanent improvement in the health care of Rwanda.
Dr Kiran Awasthi, course participant in 2009, gives an update of his work in Nepal:
"After the course, I was eager to apply what I had learnt. Though I had been giving ART training in the past, now I was more equipped and qualified. Not surprisingly the training was much easier. Till now I have given an ART training to 70 health workers and 40 dental graduate students doing more than 1000 ART treatments during the course of the teaching.
I also learnt a lot about dental public health and started focusing more on prevention and promotion. The effective training of more than 150 teachers all over Nepal has resulted into 20 different government schools throughout the country running a daily brushing program".
