Dr. Mohammad Tawfique Hossain Chowdhury (course 2011), Assistant Professor/Head of the Department in Dental Public Health at Sapporo Dental College and Hospital (SDCH), Dhaka, Bangladesh, reports: The DGOH course significantly contributed to my capacity building and has made me confident to take evidence based decisions which I hope will make our current community project (see below) successful. Moreover, academically I shared my ideas regarding Problem Based Learning and Evidence Based Treatment with other faculty members.
I am responsible for the education/training of undergraduates and research coordinator for different community projects of SDCH. This college, established 2000 to promote the level of education and to ensure equity in receiving oral health care, runs under the non-profitable "Foundation for Health Education, Service and Research (FHESR)". SDCH has successfully accomplished community oral health projects among slum dwellers and rural underprivileged population in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Recently, a project has been launched by FHESR in the Gazipur district in collaboration with Dentaid, UK. The key components are the Basic Package of Oral Care (BPOC) and ART, with the aim to provide care at grass-root level. I have been training the staff in ART. Already 12 dental camps have been completed: treatment and preventive services have been provided to almost 1400 people. Dental services are also provided in 2 tertiary community dental clinics. In addition, we have started an oral health education program in schools.

Dr. Itsaranuwat Yongpisanphop (2010) gives an update: "I work as a dentist in a Community Hospital, Ratchaburi, Thailand. After returning from Nijmegen I continued to work on Oral Health Prevention and Promotion, from the concepts of Teeth for Life, Participation and Sustainability.
Examples of our projects are: a scaling program for pregnant women in the 2nd trimester to prevent low-birth weight infants, a fluoride varnish application program and parents training on Well Baby Clinic oral health, the Healthy Teeth Happy Life kindergarten and primary school network, a pit & fissure sealant program for children 6-12, fluoridated toothpaste brushing at school with music 2 times a day for at least 2 minutes, ART in elderly with root caries.
Moreover, I teached ART in a community program in central Thailand financed by the Dental Health Division of the Ministry of Public Health.
Recently the Indonesia Dental Public Health Meeting 2011 invited me as a guest speaker in 'Preventive Dentistry'. This was a great honor and it gave me the opportunity to share our experiences of 'Changes'. Our projects induced a large number of positive changes:in attitude, skills, relationships between doctors and teachers, creation and exchange of innovation, development of a Dental Health Care Service System and a Dental Problem Monitoring and Information System.
My plans for the future are to continue to work on Oral Health Prevention and Promotion, because in this way I can contribute to the quality of life of children and adults'.

Dr Lonim Prasai Dixit (course 2010) reports: I work as a faculty in the Department of Community Dentistry, Peoples Dental College and Hospital in Kathmundu, Nepal, and serve as a executive member of the Nepal Public Health Foundation, which focuses on Health policy, Health system research, Non Communicable Disease control etc.
The DGOH course has helped me to strengthen my skills and knowledge. After returning, I shared my experiences with under- and postgraduate students helping them to understand presentation and report writing skills, research methodology and evidence based dentistry. I also stress the use of Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) for developing countries like Nepal where untreated dental caries is almost 100% in school aged children in rural areas. ART is taught and practiced by dental students in school based oral health programs and community based camps organized by the Department of Community Dentistry. The course has strengthened my advocacy skills and helped me gain in depth understanding of oral health promotion and prevention.
The Department in collaboration with local NGOs, INGOs and Dental Associations has over the years provided oral health care services such as screening, ART, extraction, oral health education, tooth brushing programs and teachers training in schools, orphanage and community in different districts of Nepal: 7300 patients were treated in 2010.

Dr. Ambrina Qureshi, 2011 course participant, works as an Assistant Professor and Post graduate supervisor in Community Dentistry at DIKIOHS, Dow University of Health Sciences Karachi, Pakistan. Her department is so far the second one in Pakistan that is offering post graduation in community dentistry. Dedicated professionals in this field are very scarce in Pakistan. She is responsible for the education and training of approx. 100 under-graduate, 4 post-graduate and 25 dental hygiene students. Furthermore she carries out dental epidemiology in both urban and rural communities, and among groups such as mentally handicapped, orphans and thalasaemic children. Recently she conducted a ART workshop conducted for health care professionals, especially Dental Hygienists where 25 participants learned hands-on ART. It was such a success that more workshops are planned in the near future. Dr Qureshi considers that ART goes beyond a clinical setting and can be performed by trained personnel so as to ensure timely intervention and prevent complete loss of teeth consequent to dental decay.

Dr. Sadai Mur Lagraba from Bolivia, DGOH course 2008 , reports:
Afterwards I felt like a new person, with another point of view in my life and my profession. I learned new strategies that could make a difference for the people in my city. So upon return I studied the incurrence of cavities in children and sent the statistical information to the authorities: 97% of the children had serious cavity problems!
We have founded the Society of Paediatric Dentistry in my home town Tarija, with currently 15 members.I tried to introduce prevention, promote ART, I talked with my colleagues and I gave a lecture about prevention. They profited from the information, because they attend many children at the University or in rural areas.
I decided that mothers need to know (more) about the effects of food/sugar on the teeth of their children. So I wrote many articles about this topic in women's magazines. We made a radio program of 5 minutes, like an advertisement: 'Don't forget to brush your teeth.......It's quite important if you like to keep your teeth in your mouth'! I was very happy with the results, because people took notice...........my colleagues imitated me for months.
'Prevention is a continuous action': So I decided to become a member of the Bolivian Paediatric Dental Society. At one of the meetings I suggested to organize a congress. The Congress will be held in Tarija, Bolivia November 17-19, 2011 and one of the topics will be the improvement of oral care in Children and Adolescents (more)

Dr Kiran Awasthi, course 2009, reports on the Basic Package for Oral Care project in Nepal during the last 6 months. The following was achieved:
We also propose to do a pilot in two small Village Development Committees outside of the valley where we are planning to instigate schools tooth brushing program in all the 22 government and 5 private schools with the help of local NGO's working there. This will be starting from the end of June where we will look to start with just 5 schools and then build on the number every year.

Training program for community health workers in Nairobi, Kenia
DGOH collaborates with the University of Nairobi Dental School to develop a one day community health workers (CHW) training program, as part of the PhD project of Dr. Lucina Koyio.
HIV related oro-facial lesions are typical in their clinical appearance and can ideally be detected by CHW. Most lesions are painful and may compromise eating and swallowing, and people may seek advice from CHW. However, in Nairobi, CHW were not trained in recognition of HIV-related oral lesions.
During the training, CHW receive information to improve their knowledge and competences in recognition of various oral HIV lesions, in community mobilization and referral of patients, and in the use of community health strategy data tools.
Recently DGOH consultant Dr. Wil van der Sanden visited training sessions. CHW were very enthusiastic afterwards. This program will contribute to improving the quality of life of the inhabitants of Nairobi.
April 2011
Dr Wil van der Sanden, DGOH staff member since 2010, introduces himself:
This is a brief overview of my professional career:
- graduation College of Dental Sciences Nijmegen 1986
- full-time general dental practitioner 1986 -1998
- teacher/researcher Nijmegen, 1998 - 2010; PhD 2003
- principal lecturer Nijmegen, 2010 - present
- staff member DGOH, 2010 - present.
My thesis 'Clinical Practice Guidelines in Dental Care. Studies on development and use' (->more) was the first thesis in The Netherlands in the field of 'Quality of Oral Health Care', which is still my main research area. There is a chasm between the (oral) health care we have, and the care we could have. Quality of oral health care has numerous aspects, I am especially interested in improving the quality of life. At the moment I am involved in the following projects:
1. Early detection of HIV related oral lesions (Nairobi, Kenya) ->more.
2. Minimal invasive techniques (El Minia, Egypt, 3 publications sofar)
3. Prevention of development or progression of dental decay (e.g., early childhood caries, Peru)
I am looking forward to collaborate with PhD students from all over the world on projects aimed at improving the quality of life.
