About BPOC

The BPOC comprises of oral health care methods that are feasible and affordable for low income communities. These methods aim to integrate basic oral care into the existing primary health care system. This approach will increase the level of preventive and curative oral treatment.
The main components of BPOC are:

- Oral Urgent Treatment (OUT) aimed at relief of oral pain and emergency treatment (mainly extraction).

- Affordable Fluoridated Toothpaste (AFT) aimed at facilitating the cleaning of teeth through making available effective fluoride toothpaste.

- Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART), aimed at provision of curative and preventive care.

- Oral Health Promotion (OHP) supporting implementation of BPOC components and aimed at improving people's control over their oral health.

BPOC aims to reach all people at a much lower cost than traditional oral health services. The content of the BPOC depends on the existing supporting conditions and infrastructure, the level of development, the perceived needs of the population and the interest of all potential partners.

BPOC components and aspects of implementation of these components are the topic of various  DGOH research projects, in order to reinforce the evidence base.
