About ART

The Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) approach consists of 2 components: a caries preventive, through application of ART sealants, and a restorative, application of ART restorations to carious cavities. Both types of treatments involve no dental drill, plumbed water or electricity.

The ART approach is entirely consistent with modern concepts of preventive and restorative oral care, in particular with the concept of Minimal Intervention Dentistry. Moreover pain and discomfort are rare during ART treatment, thus virtually eliminating the need for an anaesthetic.

The treatment of dental caries by ART is not limited to the dental clinic and has been proven by well trained dentists in ART to be effective in rural areas. Experiences over the years have shown that dentists who have attended a well organized ART course, produce restorations that last longer than dentists who started applying ART without attending a course or after attending only a short term ART course. ART-trained dentists are able to act as teacher in ART for spreading the ART approach to local ancillary dental personnel.

The DGOH acts as a centre of Global ART promotion.
